Our divisions usually aren’t caused by a difference in theology but a lack of relationship. our problem is not our difference of opinion or interpretation; it’s the shallowness of our love.” — Francis Chan, Until Unity

Chan charge to readers is that maintaining the unity of believers within the local, national and global church is at the center of God’s originally intended desire for His bride. The real issue of divisions and disunity lies in a lack of love for one another and a lack of true understanding for what Christ has commanded believers to do, that they may be witnesses to all mankind.

Book Review:

Recently, I watched a session of a virtual conference in which Pastor Francis Chan was invited as one of their guest speakers. He shared some new revelations he had overseas in Asia and how it has changed his perspective on ministry, especially the global church and how God is moving in places in and outside of the United States. I can see how those experiences impacted his writing as this book reveals some foundational biblical truths about God’s desire for all believers to prioritize worshipping him above all, individually and as a corporate body—and that ultimately unity is not possible unless we truly encounter him, then trust and surrender to God’s greater agenda. He emphasizes his belief that diversity among denominations, theology, etc. and its people from different backgrounds can still band together to achieve the kingdom mission, because this is what God desires and asks us to do.

Favorite Excerpts:

  • “There is nothing you have to do today that is more important than worshipping Him.”
  • “Worship is our path to unity.”
  • “We’ve all met people who are so spirit-filled that they seem to be glowing. Their intimacy with Christ is visible.”
  • “The result of sanctification is… to surrender more fully readily and joyfully.”
  • “Jesus prays for a union that resembles what He has with the Father.” (Reference to John 17:20-23)
  • “Again, an important distinction needs to be made: a person may know a lot about grace and even be able to preach good sermons about grace without ever having experienced it.”
